Benefits of Kicking and Punching

Specifically what are the physical benefits?

Kicking and punching are the fundamentals of our martial art; Taekwondo.

So training them is important, and our students learn so much more than just ‘punching and kicking.’

So much more than ‘fighting’ or ‘learning to defend oneself.’

The physical benefits of training a good punch, and good kicking techniques are changes in our bodies.

For the better!

No, you won’t end up looking like Arnold by solely training Taekwondo…

(A good thing, or a bad thing depending on who you ask!)

But that’s not to say you won’t get stronger, or see improvements in your body composition!

Let’s take a look at the meaning of Taekwondo.

“The way of the foot and fist.”

“The Foot, The Fist, The way of life.”

Or simply put, how we use our arms and legs to effectively defend ourself, and improve our life.

Now think about it, ‘arms’ or ‘fist’ can be interpreted as the upper body.

Chest, back, core, shoulders, triceps, biceps, etc.

The ‘legs’ or ‘foot’ could be seen as the lower body.

Quads, Glutes, calves, hip flexors, hamstring, etc.

So what kind of changes can we see from training in Taekwondo?

Well any good personal trainer or fitness expert will tell you that compound movements are the most beneficial when training. These movements involve more than one set of muscles.. meaning you’ll get a whole body benefit and work more with less time.

Every kick, is a compound movement!

Ever punch, is a compound movement!

When kicking, we are drawing energy from the ground in the form of a weight transfer, and the extension/distension of various muscle groups.

When we punch, it’s the same thing!

You’ll start to notice that you can walk, run, bike, hike, and more for a longer period of time without getting tired. Maybe you’ll start to see more definition in those leg muscles when the shorts season begins!

You’ll also notice that proper punching and blocking techniques will improve your posture in the upper body, maybe even some arm definition!

Like I said before, solely training Taekwondo does not mean you’ll get jacked!

It DEFINITELY means your body can become more lean, and stronger!

The last part of the meaning of Taekwondo (from a physical and fitness perspective) is the ‘way of life.’

Have you ever heard the expression:

Abs are made in the kitchen!

So even if you work out like Arnold, if you don’t eat the right amount of calories, protein, and rest enough every night.. your body won’t change!

So eat the good foods, eat enough protein, get enough sleep, get a massage, roll out your muscles, keep training Taekwondo and you’ll see some great results coming in the weeks and months to follow.

Train hard, and see you on the mats.👊
